Dolls have been children's play toys for centuries, but antique dolls also served other functions. From the 14th through 18th centuries, doll making was centered in Europe, mainly in Germany and France. During the mid-19th century, child and baby dolls, made in wax, cloth, bisque, and porcelain were introduced. Doll making in the United States began to flourish in the 1900's with companies such as Effanbee, Madame Alexander, and Ideal.
