Prior to the 1740's the majority of antique English porcelains were of Japanese or Chinese origin and therefore, imported and made available on the open market. Because of the availability of these wares, the early English potters attempted to duplicate the oriental and continental porcelains and seemed to achieve limited success.

The earliest antique English porcelain was made at the Chelsea factory in the early 18th century. As the market went through experimentation with soft paste porcelains, instabilities in those formulas led to greater interest in hard paste porcelains developed at Plymouth by William Cookworthy.

In order for England to become a major supplier to the world-wide market of hard paste porcelains, Josiah Spode of Stoke developed bone china, which led to the development of cream colored earthenware. Antique English Porcelain, such as transferware, creamware, blue willow, chintz, and flow blue, set trends for many of the makers of both utilitarian and decorative wares.
