Antique German porcelain production by a number of small, privately-held factories in the 1700's was greatly influenced by larger firms such as Meissen and Frankenthal, with most copying the latter's work. Regions noteworthy for these antique German porcelain makers were North Bavaria, Dresden, Saxony, Silesia, Thuringia, and Tillowitz. Independent painters of faience and other ceramics obtained blanks from the major manufacturers and then decorated these pieces, achieving their zenith during the mid-18th century.

Progressing into the 19th century, Germany was making high quality utilitarian antique porcelain and decorative antique porcelains. The predominant factories producing fine hard paste porcelain, bisque, portrait ware, and figurines were Meissen, Sitzendorf, Rosenthal, Hutschenreuther, Heubach, Schafer and Vater, Volkstedt, and most notably, Schlegelmilch with production including R.S. Prussia and related wares.
